2015 - 2016 Season

by Octavio Solis

In this acclaimed early play by renowned writer Octavio Solis (Se Llama Cristina at INTAR; Pulitzer Prize nominated Lydia at Mark Taper Forum), Scout, a computer programmer with promise of upward mobility, attracts the interest of Liza and Vince, foolhardy opportunists in a complicated relationship. Vince drags the trio home where his wife Elena remains homebound smoking pot, watching porn, and craving snow peas. A drink and drug-fueled night between unlikely friends scrapes down desires, secrets, and identities to the bone.

Prospect received its West Coast Premiere at El Teatro Campesino in 1993. It has received subsequent productions at the Latino Chicago Theatre Company, The Magic Theatre in San Francisco, and the North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, CA. This will be the play’s first time on the East Coast.

El Barrio RAÍCES Summer Camp

The main purpose of El Barrio RAÍCES art camp is to cultivate the arts in our participants thru various disciplines of theater. Unfortunately for the younger & minority members of our community, there are very few options of bilingual summer camps and arts classes in Spanish Harlem. With our program they will have a fun and educational alternative for spending their summer vacation. We will offer them tools that will help them in there develop as future professionals and art lovers. For us is important the participation of the parents. We will encourage the parents by providing sessions that will be open to them. We will also focus on our roots, raíces. We will seek thru our exercises and curriculum the search of our past, our ancestors; we want to achieve a connection with the richness of our community. We want to give them the opportunity of visiting traditions that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Our staff will consist of members of our community as well as respected professionals from other boroughs as well as invited artists from Puerto Rico. Each professional artist will bring their own experience and rich background to the Raíces Camp.

This program was founded thanks to the initiative and support of La Marqueta Retoña and the Office of House Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
